Crap Dectection 101, Matt White

When it comes to the crap test,
this is how ol' Howard Rheingold adds up.

C - Currency: It would appear that this article was posted on June 30, 2009. However, there are comments as recent as August 12, 2009. I can't find anything saying the piece has been updated since being posted, so I will assume it has not. Nevertheless, it is still somewhat recent.

R - Reliability: Well, the fact that this entire article is based upon finding reliable information, it would be ridiculous if the author didn't put at least some effort into his fact checking. But more than that, the plethora of external information allows us some assurance to its reliability. I feel that the piece is somewhat directed to an older generation who may not know how to find credible information on the internet, but other than that I don't see much of a bias.

A - Authority: The author, Howard Rheingold, has a wide range of credentials. They include everything from being an author, an editor for many online and paper publications, as well as an instructor at various institutions. The publisher seems to be The San Francisco Chronicle, who I’m sure is very reputable. Oddly enough, there seems to be a large amount of RCMP advertisements... weird.

P - Point of view/purpose: The point of view is obviously Howard's, and the purpose is simple: to give people advice on the best way to find reliable information on the web.
